Triage and initial assessment

The stretcher is wheeled through to the resuscitation area of A+E (Accident and Emergency). You ask the patient some questions while the nurse takes some observations.

You find out:

• His name is Andy Simpson

• He is 24 years old

• Not on any medication

• Admitted for an appendix operation when he was 7 years old

• He tells you that his right leg and abdomen are very painful
