History of presenting complaint

During her consultation with the doctor, she says: 'the contractions are weak and fairly painless, but I have noticed copious vaginal discharge.'

After a while, she adds: '...actually it was my husband who convinced me to come to hospital, reminding me that my last pregnancy was premature and that this one could be too. I think that if I were to rest at home, the contractions would disappear. However my husband was adamant.'

Mrs Grazyna goes on to ask whether you think she is at risk of premature labour.

Which of the following statements about contractions before labour are true?

  • Post contraction muscular relaxation occurs in all part of the uterus simultaneously.
  • The body of the uterus decreases in size before the lower portion of the uterus.
  • The duration of a contraction is longest at the neck of the uterus.
  • The strength of the contraction is the same in all parts of the uterus simultaneously.
