Treatment for Mr O'ConnorAfter speaking to Mr O'Connor, you examine him briefly. He has a 1.5cm laceration on his forehead above his eye, and bruising around the eye. There is no evidence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak from the nose or ear. Although the tissues around the eye are swollen, there is no deformity or injury to the bones of the orbit and the eye movements are normal and painless. Neurological examination shows no focal neurological deficit. You discuss the case with your registrar, who is very busy in Resus. He recommends closing the wound with steristrips, and observing Mr O'Connor for 6 hours on the observation unit, but leaves any other decisions up to you, as he cannot see the patient himself. |
