START

You are out with your friends at the railway bridge over the river. It's a stifling hot day. The water is lovely but a little lower than usual. It's been a hot dry summer. This is a traditional spot for bridge diving... but not this year - it's too shallow.

You are sitting around chatting about past glories. Beer is flowing. You have some basic first aid training, where they told horror stories about people being paralysed after jumping off this very bridge.

"Even if you land feet first, it can still break your neck" you tell your friends. "Catch the wrong rock on the bottom and it's game over."

"Bullshit", yells Will, "it's just a matter of knowing how to hit the water so you don't go deep. You've seen those underwater shots of Olympic high divers. See how they curl as soon as they enter. It's easy. I'll show you!" and off he runs.

You and your buddies yell at him to come back...but he's a man on a mission.

Will hits the water cleanly but after a few seconds bobs gently to the surface face down. He is clearly unconscious.
