You have been working with your Resident in a rural community for about 3 weeks now. You find out that she requires her food to be Halal but the hospital canteen is not prepared to compromise and create Halal dishes for her. She is just about starving because she has not enough time to bring in her own food.

How do you want to handle this situation with the kitchen?

  • Reprimand the chief cook for being so insensitive
  • Sit down with the cook and the resident to discuss issues, barriers and common ground
  • Bypass the kitchen and contact the regional centre and arrange for Halal meals to be sent down already prepared
  • Give the resident more shift flexibility so she has time to prepare her own food, but cutting into clinical time
  • Suggest to the resident that she be less sensitive about her diet to optimize her learning opportunities
